Natuurlatex of wol kussen: wat is het verschil?

Natural latex or wool pillow: what is the difference?

A pillow needs to do more than simply feel soft. It should support your head and neck comfortably, suit your sleeping position and remain comfortable throughout the night. If you consciously choose natural materials, you will quickly come across two different fillings: natural latex or wool.

Both materials are natural, but the sleep feel is clearly different. Natural latex is resilient, shape-retaining and provides relatively consistent support. Wool feels softer and more flexible and is also known for its natural regulation of heat and moisture.

Which of the two suits you best therefore mainly depends on how much support you want, how you sleep and what feel you prefer.

Natural latex or wool pillow: what is the main difference?

The biggest difference lies in how the filling responds when you place your head on the pillow.

Natural latex springs back immediately and retains its shape. This gives your head more stable and consistent support. The material feels relatively firm and elastic without necessarily feeling hard.

Wool is more flexible. The fibres move with you more easily and provide a softer, more natural feel. With adjustable wool pillows, you can also remove or add filling, allowing you to adjust the height and volume.

What does a natural latex pillow feel like?

Natural latex is an elastic material that quickly springs back when you move. This creates a different feel from a loosely filled pillow. Your head does not slowly sink away, but is supported immediately.

This can be pleasant if you like a pillow that retains its shape. Especially if you regularly change position, the support remains relatively consistent.

A natural latex pillow is therefore interesting for people who want a clearer supportive feel and have less need for a pillow that continually moulds around them.

An example is NaturaBed’s organic natural latex pillow. For those specifically looking for more support around the head and neck, there is also an ergonomic natural latex pillow.

What does a wool pillow feel like?

A wool pillow feels softer and less shape-retaining than natural latex. The fibres give way when you rest your head on them, creating a supple, cosy feel.

An important advantage is that the amount of filling in adjustable wool pillows can be changed. You can therefore experiment with the height and volume until the pillow fits your body better.

This makes wool interesting for people who do not like a pillow to feel like a fixed shape. You can fine-tune the support as you use it.

Which pillow suits your sleeping position?

Your sleeping position is at least as important as the choice between latex and wool. A pillow that works perfectly for a side sleeper may be far too high for a stomach sleeper.

Natural latex or wool for side sleepers?

Side sleepers usually need enough height to fill the space between shoulder and head. A pillow that is too low can cause the head to tilt downwards.

Natural latex can be interesting if you prefer stable support. Wool can be attractive if you would rather determine the amount of filling yourself. With an adjustable wool pillow, you can adjust the volume until the height better matches your shoulder width and sleeping position.

For back sleepers

Back sleepers generally need less height than side sleepers. The head should be comfortably supported without being pushed too far forward.

Both natural latex and wool can work well here. The main difference is the feel. Natural latex provides more stable support, while an adjustable wool pillow allows you to fine-tune the amount of filling.

For stomach sleepers

Stomach sleepers generally benefit from a lower, more flexible pillow. A pillow that is too high can put the head and neck in an unfavourable position.

A thin wool pillow can be interesting for this group. This type is specifically intended for people who want little height and mainly sleep on their back or stomach.

Which material sleeps warmer?

Temperature is an important difference between a pillow that feels comfortable when you go to bed and one that remains comfortable throughout the night.

Wool naturally has strong moisture- and temperature-regulating properties. The fibres can absorb and release moisture, making the pillow less likely to feel clammy. This can be particularly pleasant if you get warm easily or regularly sweat while sleeping.

Natural latex is also breathable and can ventilate well thanks to its open structure. The sleep feel is nevertheless different. If you mainly value a dry, temperature-regulating feel, you will probably appreciate wool’s properties more.

Do you mainly wake up because you get hot quickly? Also read our guide to choosing a breathable pillow for warm sleepers.

Adjustable or shape-retaining: which do you prefer?

This is one of the most practical differences between the two materials.

A natural latex pillow has a fixed shape and a clearly supportive character. You mainly choose the model and height that suit you.

With an adjustable wool pillow, you can change the amount of filling yourself. This is useful when you do not yet know exactly which height feels comfortable, but also when your preference changes over time.

For many people, adjustability is also an advantage when switching to a natural pillow. The feel can differ from a traditional synthetic pillow, so it can be helpful to gradually adjust the support.

Natural latex or wool for a sensitive sleep climate?

People who consciously choose natural materials often look beyond support alone. Material purity and the sleep climate also matter.

Wool and natural latex are both natural materials, but their properties differ. Wool stands out mainly for moisture and temperature regulation. Natural latex mainly provides resilient, consistent support.

If you are also specifically looking for a pillow for sensitive skin or allergies, do not look only at the filling. The cover fabric, certification and complete material construction are also relevant. In that case, our guide to a hypoallergenic pillow made from natural materials can help.

Other natural pillow fillings

Natural latex and wool are not the only natural options. NaturaBed also offers several other natural pillow fillings, so you do not have to limit your choice to one type of material.

  • Kapok for those looking for a light and airy natural filling.
  • Horsehair for those interested in a resilient, highly breathable filling.
  • Spelt for those looking for a more mouldable filling with a different feel.
  • Millet as an alternative for those looking for another type of natural, mouldable filling.

Ultimately, the best filling depends on the combination of support, height, ventilation and personal feel. It is therefore wise to look not only at the material, but at what you actually need during the night.

How do you choose between natural latex and wool?

Choose mainly based on the feel you are looking for.

Choose natural latex if you:

  • prefer stable and resilient support;
  • like a pillow that retains its shape;
  • want more structural support around the head and neck;
  • are interested in an ergonomic pillow shape.

Choose wool if you:

  • prefer a softer, more flexible pillow;
  • place a high value on moisture and temperature regulation;
  • want to be able to adjust the amount of filling yourself;
  • want a natural, less shape-retaining feel.

Still unsure? First determine what is missing from your current pillow. Is it mainly too soft or does it provide insufficient support? Then natural latex may be the more obvious choice. Do you wake up hot, want a softer feel or want to adjust the height yourself? Then wool may be the better direction.

The right choice is mainly about the right support

There is no universally best pillow filling. Natural latex and wool both have clear advantages, but they create a different sleep feel.

Natural latex is particularly strong when you need stable, resilient support. Wool is attractive when you want a softer, flexible filling that also naturally helps regulate heat and moisture.

The ability to adjust the filling of an adjustable wool pillow makes that choice especially flexible. Ultimately, it is not about the material that sounds best on paper, but about a pillow that allows your head and neck to remain relaxed throughout the night.
